Detective work, rocks analysis, identification, and Volcanoes.
Finding rocks
The class will start at the Rockville Skate Park parking, located at:
355 Martins Lane, Rockville MD 20850.
We will explore the park for common geological formation while collecting some interesting rocks. We will note the coordinate where we find the rock and how deep was the rock in the ground. Then, we will bring all that information to the class at the Rockville Science center.
Class topics/activities
What are rocks? How are they formed? Video on volcanoes.
Detective work, rocks analysis, identification, and finding a match with existing samples.
Write up findings that will be collected by instructor for verification by a geologist.
You will take home your samples with notes after the class.
Before the class, you can also go out into your neighborhood or local parks and collect several interesting rocks. Write down where you found the rock and how deep was it in the ground. Take a picture of where you found the rock.
Bring the rocks and information to the class. If possible, send the picture and notes to: explorations@rockvillesciencecenter.org
