The New York Times referred to him as a "socially minded R&B singer" which reflects the tough lessons he learned after serving 10 years in prison for an arson related conviction at the age of 14. After prison, Jennings pursued his musical aspirations and appeared at the world famous Apollo Theater where he won the talent competition five times. He later signed with Columbia Records and released his debut album "Lyfe 268-192" named for the number assigned to him in prison.
Jenning's first single "Must Be Nice" was a breakthrough hit featuring his soulful singing, thoughtful lyrics and "folk soul" music. His sophomore album "Phoenix" was his most successful reaching #1 on both the Billboard Pop and R&B charts, certified gold with more than 500,000 sold and featured #1 R&B hit single "S.E.X.", a provocative duet with the late singer LaLa Brown. His next album "Lyfe Change" was also #1 R&B followed by three more albums during the last decade that were Top 10 R&B with several singles on the R&B charts including Top 20 hits "Never Never Land" and "Statistics."
